An interview with Michelle Boyce, Director of Maissone
From Singapore there are a myriad of travel destinations to visit. From far off places to towns a quick boat or car ride away. Michelle Boyce had spent over 10 years travelling and, with each stop, returned home with treasured homeware and nic nacs that she had found along the way in back streets and random shops. Friends would invariably comment on these items, wondering where she got them and wishing they could find something similar here. It was with these queries in mind that Michelle decided to start Maissone, a boutique shop that sells homeware and bed linen. Always passionate about beautiful design and interiors, she now curates designer and one off pieces to complement the homes of Singapore.
Michelle’s Maissone is a one-stop-shop of unique and beautiful homeware, including exclusive bed linen from New Zealand. This month she is part of The Attaby Collective, upstairs at 76 Haji Lane. Ordinary People got the chance to talk to her about her store and the objects she assembles.
What was it like going from personal collector to starting your own store?
Hugely satisfying – with my passion for lovely things I wanted to make quality, stunningly designed products available to everyone.
Tell us a little more about the items and collections you bring in to Singapore.
I look carefully for brands that I recognize from both a consumer and a buyer prospective. Products that are not too fussy and have good asthetics. On my regular travels I look for something unique that will grab the attention of our customers.
A product has to live up to the quality test too. I have sampled the linen from Thread Design, which is the brand I started Maissone with. I know I can stand behind it because my entire family uses it and has done for over 12 years.
Where are your favourite places to shop for your one-off and designer pieces?
I love to shop when I travel, seeking out the best of what each city has to offer. I am passionate about New Zealand design of course! I think New Zealand is home to a culturally diverse range of talented and creative ‘Kiwis’ who are proud of their heritage. From renowned film-maker Sir Peter Jackson to designers like David Turbridge. Of course, food and wine is also an essential ingredient to a New Zealand experience.
What’s coming up next for Maissone?
I have some pretty serious goals that combine with an exciting plan for the remaining 2016, the main thing I hope to achieve with Maissone are customers who love our products and our brand.
Is there any advice you’d like to give to someone who would like to start their own store?
Follow your heart, do your research and understand who your likely customer is. Work backwards from there.
